Market For Brangus Is On The Rise

THE Brangus female is growing in popularity with the breeds genetics now seen in herds stretching from the far north of Queensland, down to the snowfields in Southern New South Wales and to the Mornington Peninsula of Victoria.

Australian Brangus Cattle Association (ABCA) CEO Tessa Pearson said the climactic variations Brangus go into are "quite incredible".

"The surging interest in Brangus generally is reflected in saleyard reports and premiums being paid at store and prime cattle sales as well as in studstock sales, especially over the past twelve months," Ms Pearson said.

She said the the popularity of the breed has been quietly building for some time.

"We're seeing black shiny coats in more breeder paddocks across the country, and premiums are being offered in feedlots."

Ms Pearson said strong support across the ABCA's membership in regards to the strengthening of guidelines around DNA and semen measures has seen a terrific boost in buyer confidence at studstock sales.

"We're fortunate to have a very active breed office and board which implements and supports our members through these processes, ensuring our herdbook is a strong and reliable resource."

She said Brangus females have "unparalleled mothering ability".

"This comprises a combination of good fertility, ease of calving, and doing a top job in raising the calf (in both nutrition and protection from predators).

"This is in addition to the outstanding adaptability of Brangus in general, with its capacity to handling the various pest, climate, and weather challenges Australia experiences (such as ticks, flies, heat, drought, wet seasons and even snow).

"Brangus lend themselves to crossbreeding operations as well. Whether producers are chasing conversion to a black herd or maintaining a red breeding base building on other breeds."

The growing demand for Brangus females was evident last year at the Telpara Hills Brangus and Ultrablacks Sale, in September, and the 46th Rockhampton Brangus Sale, in October.

At the Telpara Hills sale, all 36 females offered by the Pearce family, sold to average $23,694, topping at $44,000 for Telpara Hills Miss Three D 392R15.

At the Rockhampton sale, Barronessa Aspen 820S1, offered by the Strazzeri family, Barronessa stud, Atherton, reached $45,000.

In all 43 females were sold to average $10,395 for a 100 percent clearance.

An addition to the Brangus stud stock sales calendar will be the Brangus Ladies Invitational Notable Genetics (BLING) Sale, on Thursday, April 27, from 6.30pm at Paradise Lagoons, Nine Mile, Qld.

GDL sale agent and coordinator Georgie Connor said the sale will provide an "empowering moment" for the Brangus female.

"25 lots will be offered from 13 highly regarded Brangus studs, which normally retain heifers of this quality within their herds," Ms Connor said.

She said when deciding on the breed to showcase in the sale it was a "no brainer".

"Brangus breeders are progressive people. Their support and mindset regarding this opportunity has made it an absolute pleasure to work with them. Together we believe this sale will take the breed to another level."

Sale night is expected to be one to remember, with cocktail dress and canapes to be the standard for the event, which will be livestreamed to bidders in Argentina, while GDL will sell on the grounds with bidding to also be supported online via Elite Livestock Auctions.

The hope is that the BLING sale will become an annual fixture alongside the official ABCA Roma and Rockhampton sales, and the multiple on-property sales held yearly, which provide a showcase for the Brangus female, and her many benefits.
